The weeklong Kwanzaa holiday (12/26-1/1) celebrates African heritage and the "Seven Principles" of an abundant and ever-renewable life: Unity, Self-Determination, Collective Work & Responsibility, Sharing, Purpose, Creativity & Faith. It is traditionally celebrated with a lights ceremony, cultural artifacts and art objects, song and dance, and a grand feast on New Year's Eve. Kwanzaa was founded in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, author, professor and Chair of the Department of African Studies at California State University. Dr. Karenga has been vitally involved since the 1960's in the Black Arts, History, Political and Cultural movements, including ancient Egyptian culture "as an essential part of Black studies."
